ART AND IMPACT

Since starting his freelance career, Prince Shakur has worked as a writer, organizer, public speaker, and content creator to produce work at the intersection of art and impact. Much of his cultural writing explores the socio-political and personal impacts of media on black, brown, queer, and marginalized people. He was co-founder and videomaker of Two Woke Minds, a Youtube series that published short docs on social movements and travel vlogs; which earned him the 2017 Rising Star Grant from GLAAD

As an Ohio organizer, Shakur has notably helped oust former OU President, Roderick McDavis, as an organizer with the OU Student Union, disrupted a 2016 Bill Clinton speech to highlight the racist impacts of the 1994 Crime Bill, and as an organizer with Black Queer and Intersectional Collective, he’s spoken at numerous rallies, on panels, and facilitated trainings on grassroots organizing. He is a 2019 Ohio Voice Fellow, trained in various organizing methods and campaign building models.

While at Sangam House residency in Bangalore, India, Shakur participated in the Lekhana Literary Festival as a Featured Panelist and did a talk at the Bangalore Cultural Centre on black, queer radicalism and James Baldwin. He also penned the trailer script for the forthcoming documentary, Arrested Mobility, on the history of policing of black bodies.

In 2020, he was featured artist for “NOCTURNE”, an audio-installation of interviews between LGBTQIA community members that was featured in Columbus Museum of Art’s AFTER STONEWALL exhibit. He also contributed to the IN OUR DNA Campaign, which highlights impactful and radical figures throughout Cleveland history, through Shooting Without Bullets.
